Guitars are often made from wood from old growth forest, possibly from endangered species and often shipped over long distances—all factors that make guitars hard on the environment. At Tweed Guitars, we are exploring ways to make guitars from sustainable wood and other types of materials.

One of our most advanced products is our line of electric guitars made with wheatboard. Wheatboard is a product similar to wood but made from wheat. It is made from the inedible part of the plant, usually considered waster, and therefore does not reduce the available food supply. Wheatboard has sustainable benefits over wood because it is rapidly renewable, and it is grown close to where we manufacture our guitars. Wheatboard has a similar density to mahogany, and as such will produce guitars that have a similar sustain and sound. While the quality of the guitar is not reduced when using wheatboard, it is significantly better for the environment. Check back soon for statistical data on the amount of carbon reduction achievable by building guitars from wheatboard.

There are other woods and construction methods that can be used to improve the sustainability of guitars. Tweed Guitars will continue to explore these alternatives and offer more products that protect the earth.
